Postcard front using a Poster Stamp by artist Ludwig Hohlwein; Summer Festival in Munich. On the other side is a picture of the Museum festival site. Mailed to Holland, July 1938. Stamp uses gold ink for lettering, city silhouette, and butterflies about the woman’s head.

Pane of 12 poster stamps sold for 1d per stamp (1 Shilling per sheet) to benefit and publicize the traveling exhibition titled "Allies Inside Germany". The exhibition was first opened in July, 1942, in an unoccupied store in Regent Street. The exhibition was organized by the "Free German League of Culture", a social and cultural center for German and Austrian refugees in opposition to the Nazi government in Germany. The images on these fundraising stamps depict scenes of underground and resistance activity in Germany during the war.

Denmark - Gaasegildet 1913. Mortensaften, or St. Martin's Day eve, is celebrated in November in Denmark, honoring the Sainthood of Martin of Tours. Since Danes are not deeply religious people, the day holds no religious value but is celebrated nonetheless with full vigor in the embrace of family, a traditional menu and general merriment.

German tire manufacturer Metzeler AG was founded in 1863, and made extensive use of poster stamps to advertise their many product lines, including rubberized materials for clothing, household, and even aircraft use. There are at least 35 different poster stamp design, in a variety of colors.

Denmark - Højres Arbejder- og Vælgerforening was founded in 1881. It was a political party known as Højre (the Right) and resulted from a merger of the National Landowners, the National Liberals and the Center Party. This set of stamps show the banners of various district offices. Currently known as Det Konservative Folkeparti, it is one of the dozen parties currently with seats in the Parliament.

Denmark - Madsen Brothers Machine Shop in Asnæs, founded in 1894. The Madsen brothers created and marketed automated (grain) threshing machines, as well as hay presses and balers, under the brand name "Asnæs". Asnæs is a peninsula extending from the western part of Sjælland into the Kattegat.

Poster stamps advertising Eagle Brand Condensed Milk by the Carl Borden Company - set of 12 stamps depicting milk sources and delivery methods from around the world. Probably published in 1915 - two of the stamps make reference to the Grand Prize award in San Francisco in 1915 (at the Panama Pacific International Exposition).

1920s / 1930s “First Flight” poster stamps for a proposed flight by John Carberry from Amsterdam to Nairobi in his Fokker monoplane named “Miss Africa”. But the backstory of this colorful character is fascinating: “Carberry was a member of a notoriously debauched group of colonial ex-pat aristocrats who inspired the 1987 film White Mischief.”

Johannes Bachmann was a book publisher and dealer in Randers, Denmark, from 1886. He had a series of poster stamps printed to advertise two childrens’ books he published. One book was about a boy named Otto, and the other was called Rama-Sama. The stamps resembled contemporary Danish postage stamps.

Denmark – Merry Christmas 1913 / Happy New Year 1914 advertising folder from Arbejdernes Bryggeri Stjernen (Workers’ Brewery "Star"). The advertisement on the cover is for “Tax-Free” Pilsner, because beer with alcohol content under 2.8% was not taxed until 1917. The brewery was founded, in 1902, and was owned by the workers.

The Nordic Exhibition of Industry, Agriculture, and Art of 1888 - Copenhagen, Denmark. A “double medallion” type of poster stamp was produced in many colors, embossed and die-cut, and the text on the left translates to “The Deeds of Peace Bear Fruit”. The bottom example shows a rare doubling of the embossing die.

On Tuesday morning, April 16, 2024 there was a terrible fire that destroyed the iconic Dragespir (Dragon Spire) at Børsen in Copenhagen, Denmark. The building, mostly built in 1624 by Christian IV, will be rebuilt, according to the Danish Chamber of Commerce, which owns the building.

Aku Ankka – Finnish for Donald Duck – Block of 12 poster stamps. The cartoon magazine Aku Ankka was launched in Finland on December 5, 1951 – Walt Disney’s 50th birthday. Still going strong, it is one of the most popular weekly magazines in Finland. Stamps are probably from the 1950s.

Embossed, die-cut labels – the concept for these was derived from wax letter seals. Some collectors do not consider these “true” poster stamps, but they can be found in most collections. Many are highly decorative and were produced for event publicity. These are all commercial advertising for booksellers in Denmark.

1943 (World War 2 era) souvenir cover airmailed from Sydney, Australia to a small island on the north coast, Mornington. The Christmas Day signature on the back is J.B. McCarthy, a missionary who served as ruler of the island. The airplane carrying the mail was the "Coolangatta", with pilot's signature on the front. The cover is trapezoidal, no doubt wartime quality.

Denmark – Høires Arbeider og Vælgerforening (Højre’s Workers and Voters Association). HA&VF, founded in 1881, was intended to support the political party Højre, which literally means “The Right”. Poster Stamps, printed by Andreasen & Lachmann in 1913, depict the organization’s headquarters along with banners from local chapters.

Design uses the Røde Mølle (Red Mill) image that was also used by Wissing, and on other poster stamps. Other brands are also mentioned, but little information is available about the company. Multiple of 12 for 1911 "Paris-Rome-Turin" race as part of international fair in Turin. Pane shows that printer had a pair of embossing dies only that were repeated using rough guide lines outlining the stamps. Perforations die cut as part of the embossing. The ambitious race ran in May/June, covering 11 city stops, listed around the outer stamp edge.

Undocumented US Poster Stamp issued in 1909 for the “1915 Boston Exposition”, arranged by civic leaders and businessmen to make Boston “The Finest City in the World”. The committee had a “five-year plan” to foster improvements to education, transportation, economics, and health by 1915, particularly in less affluent neighborhoods.

Denmark – Advertising flyer from 1915 for Codan Book Publishers, promoting their “Pocket Map” in book format with 38 maps. Codan also published poster stamps showing maps of various parts of Denmark, one of which is affixed to the flyer. The flyer also advertises many other publications from Codan.

Denmark – Magasinets Prize Competition Poster Stamp Album. Poster stamps printed by Andreasen & Lachmann for a collecting competition in 1932. Stamps advertised business and products, the tabs had historical information next to each in the album. 60 stamps and 60 tabs printed together, but were mounted separately in the album.

“Atlantis” was a 1913 film made by Nordisk Film Kompagni of Denmark, based on a 1912 novel by German Gerhard Hauptmann. The film included an ocean liner sinking, and drew criticism for insensitivity, only a year after the Titanic tragedy.

Poster stamp set in full sheet advertising Robert Storm Petersen's first cartoon album in 1913. Petersen (1882-1949) was a Danish cartoonist and humorist known by his pen name "Storm P". Also shown are an actual album from 1946 and an entry for a literature competition in Leipzig in 1927.

Denmark – In 1931 a new type of poster stamp was created, called Mærkat (pl. Mærkater). The name and system was trademarked and they are still being printed today. There are over 25,000 different designs, and they were printed in different formats. This sheet is from 1942.

In 1916, Carl Schepler, the Copenhagen owner of Irma Margarine, published a set of 12 images from the Danish West Indies. The images were distributed, one per week, wherever Irma was sold, pasted into a collectors card, and could be redeemed for a beautiful hardbound book, published by Schepler, called “Under Palmen” with images and stories of the Danish West Indies.

The United States expressed interest in purchasing the Danish West Indies as early as the 1860s, but the actual sale did not happen until 1916, and the formal transfer occurred on April 1, 1917. Many Danes were strongly opposed to the sale, and this was one of the poster stamps issued to protest the sale.

Poster Stamp honoring Egbert Bagg (1850-1915) - celebrating his 30th anniversary as a registered insurance agent. Used on a cover from his office in 1905. The Bagg family has been prominent in Utica, NY history since the early 18th century. Egbert Bagg was also a renowned amateur ornithologist.

Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States, observed on November 11, to honor military veterans of the United States Armed Forces. The date coincides with the ending date of World War One, and was originally known as Armistice Day.
Other nations have also honored their own veterans – these poster stamps from Denmark, in 1914, honor Danish veterans of the Second Schleswig War in 1864.

Denmark - hand-painted Poster Stamp essays. c.1913/14 for the Dania Biofilm Company. One of the essays mentions one of the company's films "Gislet" [sic] with the notation that it would be released December 10. The film, called Gidslet, actually had its theatrical release on March 23, 1914. These essays appear to have been adhered to the backs of envelopes, possibly to illustrate how they could be used.

Denmark - Original Artwork for Poster Stamp promoting Købestævne (Trade Fair) in Fredericia. Hand painted essay on card in the approximate size of the finished poster stamp. Produced by the advertising agency Weber & Sørensen, founded in Aarhus in 1879. Design depicts the "Købestævnets Bygning" (Trade Fair Building), designed by architect Oscar Gundlach-Pedersen, and built in 1915. Originally intended for the 1932 Købestævne, the design was slightly modified and used for the poster stamp promoting the 1933 fair.

A printer's proof pane, imperforate, not gummed. From the presidential campaign of 1972. It's amateurish and sloppy. One can see that the rows are uneven, Nixon's face is darker in shaded areas on some stamps, and the font for REELECT was hand-drawn at a grade school level. It was issued anyway.
