Stamp for the 1897 Gas Industry Exposition. The stamp is 38 mm wide by 50 mm tall. Ink colors are red, pinkish red, yellow and bluish gray. The gray bottom inscription is “Copyright 1896 by the Gas Industries Company”. Rated RR, a rare US multicolor stamp before 1900.

Emil Pirchan (1884-1957) was noted for his bold colors and designs. Here is a group of four stamps depicting a city park with text in Esperanto, plus the classic Verda Stela. Denmark - Carl Aller's Etablissement was founded in 1873, and eventually became a large media conglomerate. In the c1940s CAE produced a series of 36 poster stamps promoting their various branches. Denmark - An interesting but short-lived concept in poster stamps. Issued to advertise the Victoria Theater in Copenhagen, these stamps had real photographs that the collector would "develop" by following the instructions on the reverse: "Put this stamp in water with a little soda, and a beautiful photograph will immediately appear". c.1913.

Denmark - Poster stamps issued by stamp dealer A. W. Hermansen of Horsens. He modeled his stamps after the newly issued Danish Airmail stamps issued in 1925-26. Since the other two stamps in the set were not issued until 1929, these poster stamps were probably issued between 1926 and 1929.

The card is violet stamped for the event with the name Giulio Landmans, a publisher of aviation-related items, including a catalog available on this website.

Austria Poster Stamps - Braunau am Inn - Agricultural, Forestry and Commercial Exhibition held September 1-4, 1912.
The stamps depict a bas-relief statue of Hans Staininger (1508–1567), burgermeister (mayor) of Braunau, who had a very long beard which caused his death when he tripped over it and broke his neck.

The "Smør- & Margarinehandler Forening" (Butter & Margarine Dealers Association) was a Danish trade organization for merchants dealing in butter and margarine, founded in Copenhagen in 1896. This pane of 10 stamps carries the Association name at bottom, and over 30 additional member overprints are known.

II Peschl, the owner of Brauerei Peschl until poor health caused him to hand over management, in 1929, to his son, Eduard F. III Peschl, a philatelist who probably arranged for the earlier production of the poster stamp on the cover.

Spain - poster stamps issued in 1958 to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the founding of Agrupación Fotográfica de Cataluña (Photography Association of Catalonia), known in the Catalan language as Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya. These stamps depict the group's logo, with the initials A.F.C. above and the dates 1923 1958 below. The organization is still very active.

In 1913 Danish poster stamp printers Andreasen & Lachmann announced, in the first issue of their newsletter "Samlermærket", that they would sponsor a Poster Stamp Exhibition in September. A&L produced a series of poster stamps for the event, depicting an ink roller and spatula. The stamps are known in at least 20 different colors plus many shades, and are A&L #100.

A cover with an Elmira 1923 Historical Pageant stamp, 2” diameter, a one-time affair celebrating the early history of the Elmira area– especially the Sullivan and Clinton expedition of 1779. In the Revolution, local Iroquois tribes were aligned with the British, and Washington sent Generals Sullivan and Clinton to the area to destroy Iroquois villages and burn their crops.

Palladium was founded by Lars Björck in 1915 as Skandinavisk Filmscentral, which owned a big chain of cinemas in Sweden. The chain’s flagship was the palatial Palladium cinema in Stockholm. In spring 1919 Björck acquired two Danish film companies, Kinografen and Dania Biofilm, in Copenhagen. The new company, Palladium, was a pan-Scandinavian film company with studios in Denmark and stage facilities in Sweden. These Danish stamps are from the mid 1940s, in a series of 112.

Stamp in lower left corner is not original; it was hinged over an embossed “Corporate Seal 1914” of the League. Some stains due to aged glue. The stamp was printed in several background colors, listed in Bradbury catalog.

Cover mailed from Lagos, Nigeria to Sandusky, Ohio, USA in the early 1930s. The addressee - The Barr Rubber Products Co. - was indicated by using a large poster stamp instead of a written address. There is a New York "Due 4 Cents" handstamp on the front, and two 2¢ postage due stamps with Sandusky, Ohio precancels.

Postcard mailed from Seattle WA to Portland OR, June 15 1909. The poster stamp for the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition shows the logo of the fair. This stamp is unlisted and assumed R. Picture side of the card shows Pioneer Square of Seattle in 1909.
Kansas Retail Jewelers Association- one is for a convention in Topeka and undated (but probably 1927), the other is dated 1928, for the convention held in Wichita. Both stamps depict crows wearing top hats and smoking cigars, with the title "Kaw Krows", which was an organization of traveling salesmen and manufacturers. The Phenix Label Company of Kansas City, Missouri.

USA - National Wine Week, originated during the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939, was first held September 10-17, 1939. Other poster stamps would follow to promote the event, but later weeks were held in October. While the event would continue, the final poster stamp was issued in 1951.

Spain - set of two souvenir sheets, each consisting of 4 different stamps. The sheets pay homage to Spanish operatic tenor Francesc Viñas (1863-1933), renowned for his performances of Wagner. The sheets were issued in 1954, for the 50th anniversary of the annual Fiesta del Árbol Frutal, (Festival of Fruit Trees).

A wrapper was used to mail a magazine or newspaper in Zurich to a local address on May 1, 1909. The paper was fastened with a poster stamp for the October Gordon Bennet race of 1909 in Zurich. Printer of the stamp was J.E. Wolfensberger of Zurich. The stamp was tied with a private handstamp for local business Julius Bär & Co.

"Soo Line" was the unofficial name of the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railroad, which was a subsidiary of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1915 they issued four panes of 15 stamps, each with scenes from along their routes. There are 29 different stamp designs in all in sheets A & B; and sheets D and C have not been seen intact.

The Bavarian Transport and Communications Employees’ Union of 1913 was overprinted in 1916 (during WW1) with varied phrases relating to the war: Krieg 1914, Krieg 1914/1916 in varied ink colors and fonts, making massive numbers of new varieties out of leftovers to sell to collectors. Abusive? Of course. Did the money go to the printer Consée of Munich or to the Union?

The Rebild Festival (Rebildfesten) is an annual celebration of the American Independence Day in Denmark. At the same time, it serves as a homecoming for Danish-Americans. It takes place in the Rebild National Park in Jutland from which it takes its name and is arranged by the Danish-American Rebild Society. It is the largest event celebrating the 4th of July outside the USA.

Norway - Sometimes a poster stamp can have utility beyond advertising. In this case it is used as a closure on a theater program for Det Nye Teater in Oslo in 1946. The stamp is folded over and affixed to front and back, and advertises Peter Möller's Cod Liver Oil.

Denmark - The Cooperative Farmers' Associations' Livestock Show, along with the Community Livestock Show, was held in the Fælledpark (Community Park) in Copenhagen July 3-6, 1913.
The park was built from 1908 to 1914 by landscape architect Edvard Glæsel. Text on the sheet margins reads: "Please stick on letters, packages, etc."

Who do you trust? These stamps from Bergamo, Italy, in 1897, celebrating the birth of Donizetti, are listed in two modern catalogs. Both catalogs have different identifications of the colors used, and both catalogs list colors that are different from the ones shown here. This is just one of the problems facing collectors and cataloguers of vintage poster stamps.

These two posters show a vase (left) and pottery (right) with kiln, artist carrying pots, and potter’s wheel. Picasso produced the posters annually as linoleum cuts; a set of 18 poster stamps was issued after 1958.

Pane of 20 dated 1943, honoring military heroes, ranging from obscure (nurse Anna Bernatitus #8) to famous (admiral “Bull” Halsey #3). Publisher R.L. Parkinson, Chicago; Artist Louis V. Bonhajo (1885-1972). Bonhajo painted art for several Chicago produced poster stamp series in the 1930’s-40’s, including one well known set on the life of Abraham Lincoln. Printed by halftone offset process, pane 10.4”square.

Denmark - the Copenhagen Philatelic Club, to celebrate their 25th anniversary in 1912, issued a set of three poster stamps, one of which had an image of what they envisioned for a "futuristic" airport in 1937. There was also a publicity postcard with the same image.

This card was made to be folded and mailed, inside is a schedule of events for the pre-Lent Carnival season of February 1934. The front art, signed by Uberto Bonetti, became a poster stamp pasted on the mailer side. As with many big events in Italy, the art mentions a reduced train fare to get to the fairs, the towns of Viareggio, Camaiore, Pietrasanta, and Forte dei Marmi.

The Cannes Film Festival began in 1939, for the first day only, then postponed due to WWII. In 1946 it was finally held, with 21 countries participating. An air rally was also held on September 22. There were several poster stamps prepared, and they were used on souvenir covers.

Card mailed from Bestum, Norway to Aarau, Switzerland on December 29, 1924 . The stamp at left is in German: "The capital of Norway, called Christiania from 1624 to 1924, will henceforth be called OSLO, the name the city bore for six centuries from 1047 to 1624. The change takes effect on January 1, 1925." A big change, remembered by very few –except in Norway–100 years later.
Denmark - On July 2, 194, Aarhus inaugurates its new town hall and celebrates its 500th anniversary as a market town. The building was designed by architects Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller.

May 1938 airmail cover for the opening of a new route, with 2 Cinderellas on the front. The Air Mail etiquette is for Northwest Airlines, the carrier on this route. The Railway Express Agency, seen on an advertising stamp, was a package delivery company created during the World War 1 by the government for all railroads, it survived until 1975.

Denmark - c1940s Poster Stamps sold to support the Børnehjælpsdagen (Children's Aid Day) movement. Supposedly sold in booklets, issued without gum, there is very little known about these stamps. Over 35 years I have seen fewer than 200 different designs, and no multiples. Each one has a number, 1 through 20, in a circle.

Pane of 12 poster stamps sold for 1d per stamp (1 Shilling per sheet) to benefit and publicize the traveling exhibition titled "Allies Inside Germany". The exhibition was first opened in July, 1942, in an unoccupied store in Regent Street. The exhibition was organized by the "Free German League of Culture", a social and cultural center for German and Austrian refugees in opposition to the Nazi government in Germany. The images on these fundraising stamps depict scenes of underground and resistance activity in Germany during the war.

Denmark - Gaasegildet 1913. Mortensaften, or St. Martin's Day eve, is celebrated in November in Denmark, honoring the Sainthood of Martin of Tours. Since Danes are not deeply religious people, the day holds no religious value but is celebrated nonetheless with full vigor in the embrace of family, a traditional menu and general merriment.

German tire manufacturer Metzeler AG was founded in 1863, and made extensive use of poster stamps to advertise their many product lines, including rubberized materials for clothing, household, and even aircraft use. There are at least 35 different poster stamp design, in a variety of colors.

Denmark - Højres Arbejder- og Vælgerforening was founded in 1881. It was a political party known as Højre (the Right) and resulted from a merger of the National Landowners, the National Liberals and the Center Party. This set of stamps show the banners of various district offices. Currently known as Det Konservative Folkeparti, it is one of the dozen parties currently with seats in the Parliament.

Denmark - Madsen Brothers Machine Shop in Asnæs, founded in 1894. The Madsen brothers created and marketed automated (grain) threshing machines, as well as hay presses and balers, under the brand name "Asnæs". Asnæs is a peninsula extending from the western part of Sjælland into the Kattegat.

Poster stamps advertising Eagle Brand Condensed Milk by the Carl Borden Company - set of 12 stamps depicting milk sources and delivery methods from around the world. Probably published in 1915 - two of the stamps make reference to the Grand Prize award in San Francisco in 1915 (at the Panama Pacific International Exposition).

1920s / 1930s “First Flight” poster stamps for a proposed flight by John Carberry from Amsterdam to Nairobi in his Fokker monoplane named “Miss Africa”. Johannes Bachmann was a book publisher and dealer in Randers, Denmark, from 1886. He had a series of poster stamps printed to advertise two childrens’ books he published. One book was about a boy named Otto, and the other was called Rama-Sama. The stamps resembled contemporary Danish postage stamps.

Denmark – Merry Christmas 1913 / Happy New Year 1914 advertising folder from Arbejdernes Bryggeri Stjernen (Workers’ Brewery "Star"). The advertisement on the cover is for “Tax-Free” Pilsner, because beer with alcohol content under 2.8% was not taxed until 1917. The brewery was founded, in 1902, and was owned by the workers.

The Nordic Exhibition of Industry, Agriculture, and Art of 1888 - Copenhagen, Denmark. A “double medallion” type of poster stamp was produced in many colors, embossed and die-cut, and the text on the left translates to “The Deeds of Peace Bear Fruit”. The bottom example shows a rare doubling of the embossing die.

On Tuesday morning, April 16, 2024 there was a terrible fire that destroyed the iconic Dragespir (Dragon Spire) at Børsen in Copenhagen, Denmark. The building, mostly built in 1624 by Christian IV, will be rebuilt, according to the Danish Chamber of Commerce, which owns the building.

Aku Ankka – Finnish for Donald Duck – Block of 12 poster stamps. The cartoon magazine Aku Ankka was launched in Finland on December 5, 1951 – Walt Disney’s 50th birthday. Still going strong, it is one of the most popular weekly magazines in Finland. Stamps are probably from the 1950s.

Embossed, die-cut labels – the concept for these was derived from wax letter seals. Some collectors do not consider these “true” poster stamps, but they can be found in most collections. Many are highly decorative and were produced for event publicity. These are all commercial advertising for booksellers in Denmark.

1943 (World War 2 era) souvenir cover airmailed from Sydney, Australia to a small island on the north coast, Mornington. The Christmas Day signature on the back is J.B. McCarthy, a missionary who served as ruler of the island. The airplane carrying the mail was the "Coolangatta", with pilot's signature on the front. The cover is trapezoidal, no doubt wartime quality.

Denmark – Høires Arbeider og Vælgerforening (Højre’s Workers and Voters Association). HA&VF, founded in 1881, was intended to support the political party Højre, which literally means “The Right”. Design uses the Røde Mølle (Red Mill) image that was also used by Wissing, and on other poster stamps. Other brands are also mentioned, but little information is available about the company. Multiple of 12 for 1911 "Paris-Rome-Turin" race as part of international fair in Turin. Pane shows that printer had a pair of embossing dies only that were repeated using rough guide lines outlining the stamps. Perforations die cut as part of the embossing. The ambitious race ran in May/June, covering 11 city stops, listed around the outer stamp edge.

Undocumented US Poster Stamp issued in 1909 for the “1915 Boston Exposition”, arranged by civic leaders and businessmen to make Boston “The Finest City in the World”. Denmark – In 1931 a new type of poster stamp was created, called Mærkat (pl. Mærkater). The name and system was trademarked and they are still being printed today. There are over 25,000 different designs, and they were printed in different formats. This sheet is from 1942.

In 1916, Carl Schepler, the Copenhagen owner of Irma Margarine, published a set of 12 images from the Danish West Indies. The images were distributed, one per week, wherever Irma was sold, pasted into a collectors card, and could be redeemed for a beautiful hardbound book, published by Schepler, called “Under Palmen” with images and stories of the Danish West Indies.

The United States expressed interest in purchasing the Danish West Indies as early as the 1860s, but the actual sale did not happen until 1916, and the formal transfer occurred on April 1, 1917. Many Danes were strongly opposed to the sale, and this was one of the poster stamps issued to protest the sale.

Design features Aarhus Cathedral, and is signed by noted Danish artist Thor Bøgelund-Jensen, probably produced for Andreasen & Lachmann, but there is no evidence of this design as a finished stamp.

Circa 1919, the Curtiss Aeroplane Company released a glorious set of 20 labels with various images of their planes in flight. Stamps were purchased and overprinted for use as Colombia’s C2-C10 airmail postage set. Printer & artist unknown.

Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States, observed on November 11, to honor military veterans of the United States Armed Forces. The date coincides with the ending date of World War One, and was originally known as Armistice Day.
Other nations have also honored their own veterans – these poster stamps from Denmark, in 1914, honor Danish veterans of the Second Schleswig War in 1864.

Sheet of poster stamps for the Baltic Exhibition, held in Malmö, Sweden, which began May 15, 1914. Printed by Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende. The stamps show royalty from the 4 nations attending – Sweden, Denmark, Russia & Germany. The Exhibition was cut short due to the outbreak of World War One.

They were issued by Steensen's Margarine, printed by Andreasen & Lachmann, and they depict well-known A&L poster stamps advertising Steensen products. Outer columns show the transfers, inner columns show the actual poster stamps. Wet images and apply to surfaces.

The Salon of Humorists, open to all caricaturists and cartoonists, was founded by Felix Juven, publisher of the newspaper Rire "Laugh". Its first show was held in 1907 and continued through World War II. The poster for its 1910 show was designed by Charles Leandre: "The rushed crowd rushes". approx. 3" x 4"

Denmark Recent Discovery! Industri og Landbrugsudstilling – Industrial & Agricultural Exhibition, held in Kolding, 17-26 September 1897. Poster stamp depicting Koldinghus Castle. Contemporary reports suggest 1,000 labels were to be printed, but this has never been reported in any poster stamp literature.

Denmark - hand-painted Poster Stamp essays. c.1913/14 for the Dania Biofilm Company. One of the essays mentions one of the company's films "Gislet" [sic] with the notation that it would be released December 10. The film, called Gidslet, actually had its theatrical release on March 23, 1914. These essays appear to have been adhered to the backs of envelopes, possibly to illustrate how they could be used.

Denmark - Original Artwork for Poster Stamp promoting Købestævne (Trade Fair) in Fredericia. Hand painted essay on card in the approximate size of the finished poster stamp. Produced by the advertising agency Weber & Sørensen, founded in Aarhus in 1879. Design depicts the "Købestævnets Bygning" (Trade Fair Building), designed by architect Oscar Gundlach-Pedersen, and built in 1915. Originally intended for the 1932 Købestævne, the design was slightly modified and used for the poster stamp promoting the 1933 fair.

A printer's proof pane, imperforate, not gummed. From the presidential campaign of 1972. It's amateurish and sloppy. One can see that the rows are uneven, Nixon's face is darker in shaded areas on some stamps, and the font for REELECT was hand-drawn at a grade school level. It was issued anyway.
