November 8:
Upcoming is Armistice Day, also known as Veterans Day, on November 11, the official end of World War One in 1918. The picture used for the masthead is 3 large stamps from a set of 6, published by Posthumus Publishers in Amsterdam in 1919, just after the end of the war. On the left side is a craftsman measuring a broken column, with “Restoration” in Latin. On the right is another allegory, a woman and two children, labeled “They find themselves” in Latin.
The artist for this set was Theo Molkenboer (1871-1920), a Dutch artist who died a bit young of tuberculosis, but is remembered as a successful painter and commercial art designer; a short biography can be found on Wikipedia.
