April 4: The Poster Stamp Bulletin

PSB #343, for April-May, is in the mail today, the electronic version will be posted in a few days. The theme for this issue is Art Deco, the design style of the “between the wars” era, which is unofficially said to begin in the spring of 1925, when France hosted the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, a big influence on styles around the world. As part of the “celebration” a catalog is appearing in the Library on the Chicago World’s Fair of 1933, a fair that made Art Deco a strong influence on US art and architecture for all of the 30’s. Look for the official catalog announcement in a feature article below, as we get it uploaded and working.

Art Groten has contributed an article on Chicago ’33 in the President’s Message– visible now.

The Italian stamp above advertises the latest operetta from Austria (opened in 1926), The Circus Princess, a mix of romance and circus scenes. The Hungarian composer Emmerich Kalman (1882-1953), later fled the Nazis and lived for some time in the US.
